The Solo Disconnect

The average solo traveller spends 6 hours per day on their smart-phone. We're here to help you get more from your trip, without giving more time to your screen.

Why do we travel? A recent report by Hostelworld unveiled that 75% of solo travellers say the best thing about solo travel is the freedom and independence they experience, with 45% say it's connecting with other people and cultures.

A similar report by The International Travel & Health Insurance Journal found that "freedom and flexibility" and "exploring new cultures" were the main reasons cited for solo travel.

Another study by highlighted "a desire among some travelers for greater mindfulness and immersion in the present moment."

Why are we struggling to disconnect and experience freedom, adventure and new cultures? A Go So Local survey found that solo travellers are spending on average 6 hours on their smartphones every day during their trip.

Our goal is to encourage solo travel. Travel that can be empowered and facilitated by smartphones, not dominated by it. We started Go So Local with this in mind, and so far - it seems to be working!

How screen-time effects our brains 🧠

  • Keeping screen time under two hours supports healthy brain function, reduces eye strain, and helps maintain strong cognitive performance.

Your sleep, memory, and emotional regulation all benefit when your brain isn't overloaded with digital stimulation.

  • Moderate screen use may not cause immediate harm, but it can begin to affect focus, sleep quality, and mood, especially if content is passive or anxiety-inducing.

Occasional long sessions are okay, but balance and breaks with time offline is important.

  • Excessive screen time is linked to thinning of the cerebral cortex, lower gray matter volume, poor sleep, and increased risk of depression and neurodegeneration.

It trains your brain into passive, hyper-vigilant, distracted modes leaving you foggy, anxious, and fatigued.

This could be anywhere...

On average, 1 in every 4 days away is lost to screens

Smartphones can be brilliant travel buddies. They help us navigate new places, snap memories, and communicate with ease. But there's a dark side.

Many of the most popular apps and services we rely on are built to keep us scrolling, not exploring.

This causes solo travellers to lose 1 in every 4 days to screen time. That’s a whole quarter of your trip gone!
